You may be supplying your body with enough macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats but not enough of micronutrients that are also essential for our body to function well. Malnutrition are not just suffered by people who cannot afford to buy food and those that intentionally starve themselves to lose weight but also of those who are not eating the right/balanced food every day. Lacking of essential micronutrients could also lead to malnutrition leading to different health problems.
A Nutritional supplement like multivitamins is essential for daily nutrition if the food you usually eat do not have variations for you not to suffer from vitamin deficiency. Micronutrients, namely vitamins and minerals, play a big role in metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, and in functioning of different organs in our body. They also help our body to fight against the harmful effects of stress and depression, and strengthens our immune system.
What are some of the deficiencies caused by lack of essential micronutrients? Lack of vitamins B9 (folic acid), B12 (cobalamin), vitamin C, or iron could lead to different nutritional deficiency anemia; lack of vitamin B1 (thiamine) could lead to beriberi; lack of vitamin B3 (niacin) could result to pellagra; deficiency in vitamin C could lead to scurvy; not enough of vitamin D could result to rickets in kids and osteomalacia in adults; and lack of vitamin K could result to blood coagulation disorder.
For the vitamins, they are divided into two: the water soluble vitamins as well as the fat soluble vitamins. The water soluble vitamins like vitamin B and C should be taken after meals and be replenished everyday. Fat soluble vitamins can be stored in the body fats thus, it is not necessary for us to take them every day. It is best that fat soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K be consumed before meals along with fat containing foods.
It is not necessary to take multivitamins/supplements if you can consume variety of nutritional food every day, especially fruits and vegetables. Consuming essential nutrients through the food we eat is the best way, supplements are just back up.
